So, after lunch, we all piled onto the bus for the ride out to Inje, up in the northeast corner of Gangwondo. It's always pretty funny to see everyone in their hiking clothes. People who you always see in formal or at least business-casual clothes seem so different in baseball caps and athletic pants. I felt woefully underprepared, having just worn jeans and a t-shirt. Some of my coworkers looked reading to go mountain climbing up a sheer rock face!
Thanks to midterms this week, the students get to leave school around 12:30, and yesterday, my school took advantage of that absence to go on a short trip out to the countryside. Attracted by the lure of hiking and a free meal, I signed up happily. Plus, I like seeing my coworkers outside of the work setting. It's easier to talk to people and actually get to know them, and while I don't like to admit it, the more I get people to like me, the safer my job is. In the game of NETs...
Long time no see! Or not see, exactly, but...well...anyways. Sorry I didn't write for so long. I got my first bad cold of the season, and while it tried to knock me down, I got up again because, to quote Chumbawumba, "you're never gonna keep me down." I've been working on a longer post about my teaching style and serious stuff like that, but it's taking too long, so instead I'll take you on a food tour of Jeonju! Because who doesn't love food?
Time has been flying by. It feels like just yesterday I was bemoaning the changes in my office, with favorite teachers moving to new offices or even worse, new schools, and scary new teachers moving in and refusing to let us turn the heating on. Imagine that. Wanting to turn the HEATING on. Now I have constant daydreams about air conditioning. They said it would be on this week, but...

, but what I want to talk about today is, as the title probably warned you, Chinese food in Korea.
America has it's own special brand of Chinese food (who the hell is
Kimchi boy & I have discussed many times. We will live in Korea after we get married in future. I really love Korean food but I cannot imagine eating it for the rest of my life.
By my first month in Korea (last winter), I was desperately looking for western food, chinese food... just anything but Korean. haha. Personally, I feel that Korean food all taste the same.. maybe just a different cooking style - stew, soup, BBQ, stir fry - but it is almost always red and spicy. The only thing that I look forward to in a Korean meal is the side dishes, also known as banchan (반찬).

If you have ever been to Jeonju, you will know that it is the Mecca for Makgeolli. The style of Jeonju makgeolli is to be presented with a vast array of side dish after side dish, and we managed to find a place in Seoul that gives a little taste of that. Jeonju Makgeolli also imports the owner’s personal favorite kind of makgeolli that he maintains will not give you a hangover. We weren’t entirely convinced
