Missing Korean Dramas – Where do I watch them now?

Last night when I visited Dramacrazy.net website I realized that they have shut down. And with that it seems as if they have closed yet another gate into the world of Korean Entertainment for outsiders.

the-king-2hearts - Lee Seung Ki - Romantic Korean Drama

Initially there was mysoju.com which closed down and now this. The sad part is that with sites like viki.com and dramafever.com you don’t have access to all the dramas in specific countries. So here is India I get access to limited dramas on the viki.com website.

Kimchi Warriors – The Book

If you have not heard of Kimchi Warrior yet, then think of it as the Korean Version of Popeye. Well not exactly, but Kimchi Warrior has done to kimchi what Popeye has done to spinach. Based on the premise of Popeye, Kimchi Warrior obtains supernatural strength by consuming the most prominent Korean dish, kimchi, to defend mankind from the world’s most notorious diseases like The Swine Flu, Mad Cow Disease, Malaria, SARS etc.

Young Man Kang, is the man behind the web animation series, Kimchi Warrior and he has received many an awards in the lifetime of his career. Kimchi Warrior too has received international recognition and is currently live on YouTube with 15 episodes of 5-6 minutes duration each.

This year too Google has published the zietgeist for 2012 highlighting the top 10 most searched Korean Movies in South Korea. Concubine tops the list as expected. A sultry erotic drama well-crafted in a Joseon Dynasty palace in which a royal consort is thrown into a merciless game of thrones, but it’s more than a sexed-up Korean Movie, as it skillfully interweaves compelling lust-hate relationships, character twists and familiar court intrigue.

Watching Korean Movies – How to watch Korean Movies

I’ve written a few pages on Korean films I recommend but haven’t mentioned how to view them in Korea. Here are some options.

Theater
Korean films don’t have English subs in theaters with rare exception. A few years ago the government wanted to promote Korean cinema and helped to add English subtitles to one current movie at only one location in Seoul. Both the movie and the location would change on a weekly basis. I watched two movies this way; “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” (좋은놈 나쁜놈 이상한 놈) and “Take Off” (국가 대표). Both times I was the only non-Korean in the theater and both times I found them since I happened to be at the theater when I saw a sign saying there were subtitles in English. I found a few websites that tried to tell what movie was being featured where but I think they both have ceased. Your best luck might be here.

Friendly Ghost Films

2

Horror films in Korea typically involve an apparition and there are plenty of these films. But not all ghost movies are scary. These are my favorite friendly ghost films from Korea and all are comedy-drama genre.

헬로우 고스트 (Hel.lo.u Go.su.tu)
English Title – Hello Ghost
