Food Swaps- Small Changes To Make A Big Difference

I am a total foodie- I love cooking, going out for meals and trying new things. I also care about being healthy and putting good, clean, fresh food into my body. But despite trying to be healthy the majority of the time, I also hate to deprive myself of things which I love. For this reason, I try to make small changes to make so called ‘naughty’ foods that much healthier.

Here are some of my favourite food alterations which make a big difference, so that  you can enjoy delicious foods completely guilt-free!

Convenience Foods- Korean Bodybuilding Chicken

Last year, I worked at an English Hagwon, which is a Korean private study academy. Students here go to these academies after they’ve finished their regular school day. They take classes like English, Math, Science etc… anything to possibly get them a leg up on getting into their preferred Universities once they get to that age. Even though these are elementary students, the pressure for them to perform is already very much present. I now teach at a Public Highschool, but most of the students here don’t go to a Hagwon. That’s because they go to school from 7:50am to 10:00pm. No joke. Some do go to academies after this time- I’ve ran into my students at 10:30 pm on their way to a study hall, or science academy. It breaks my heart but I’ve realized it is not in my power or ability to make any kind of change to the system. I could go on about the pressure and stress of the overworked Korean student, however that is not my goal for today.

Sweet Kabocha Puree

Last week I promised the recipe for the dip you saw with the Low Carb Protein Stick recipe, so here it is!

As you know, I LOVE kabocha. Love Love Love Love Love Love Love kabocha!!! Actually now, I get a discount at my local “Angel Home Mart”- just a random Korean grocery store on danhobak  단호박, as it’s called here. I told them it is my favourite, and because they like me, they say “special discount, only for you” :)

Low Carb Protein Sticks

This week I’m breaking the post into two parts. This post will be the protein part. Next week will be the carb part. Together, these recipes have been my post workout meal of choice recently. IMG_1426-25So what is a protein stick? Um well basically it’s just a protein pancake that has been cut into stick form. Exciting right?

What is a healthy diet?

This is such a challenging subject it seems. And yet it isn’t. But what makes a healthy diet is still such an area of confusion to so many people. And even when you follow your version of a healthy diet- is it really that?

I thought I would share my thoughts on diet. As a person who has been very food focused for many years, I’ve definitely read a great deal, experimented a lot, and am still finding myself frustrated and confused.

However, right now, and since I hired my coach, I feel better than I have all year. Do I look better? Well I still don’t feel as lean as I like to, but my show is still 6 weeks away and slowly but surely I am getting there. Before I go into what I’m doing now, I’ll share some of the things I’ve tried. And keep in mind, that although these things have worked for weight loss, they haven’t been very good for health or performance.

Curried Chicken with Creamy Veggie Puree

I sort of have a love hate relationship with chicken.

Chicken+puree (35 of 44)

It’s one of those foods that is usually safe to get when you eat out, and is pretty readily available, both positives. Also, it fits into my meal plan on both rest days and training days, so its easy for me too cook a big batch and be able to eat it every day of the week. However- whenever you end up eating something over and over and over… you can get pretty sick of it.

Tom Yam Soup with Mackerel (or frogs!)

Happy Lunar New Year everyone!  And although it is the Year of the Snake, I’m posting something with frogs- if you so dare!_MG_1286Okay so I made this soup with mackerel, a perfectly normal fish, when I made this at home.. however- I did partake in jungle frog Tom Yam soup when I went on a trek in the Northern Thailand jungle.IMG_1688I shared some of these photos already, but I didn’t really go into detail.

Sweet Potato Cookie Crisps

Do you ever make a recipe, and then remake it but cook it in a different way?

_MG_0885This is what happens when you take my Sweet Potato Cookie-Blondies and cook them in the microwave on a plate- crisp yummy cookie-crisps!
