“Biyaheng Bibimbap” on I-Witness

Last night, an award-winning documentary television program in the Philippines called I-Witness featured one of South Korea’s most popular signature dishes, BIBIMBAP.

When I was teaching in Deokso, which is nearly two hours away from where I live, I barely had time to prepare my lunch at home, so I would usually grab a bite to eat during my break time or buy some food to go. I would either get two different flavors of 삼각김밥 (samgak gimbap or triangle-shaped rice) or those four-layered sandwiches in the convenience store that had weird flavors but, nevertheless, tasted good. They would be enough to keep my stomach from growling for an hour or two, but not for the entire five or six hours that I was working.


Sindangdong Tteokbokki Town

One of the most popular street food in South Korea is 떡볶이 (tteokbokki), a spicy snack that consists of soft and chewy 떡 (tteok or rice cake), 오뎅 (odeng or fish cake) and 고추장 (gochujang or sweet red chili paste).

Anywhere in Korea, you will surely find a store or a 포장마차 (pojangmacha or street vendor) that sells this snack, but the best place to enjoy spicy Korean rice cake stew is probably in 신당동 떡볶이 타운 (Sindangdong Tteokbokki Town) where tteokbokki is said to have originated.

Last Monday, my husband and I, together with some friends, visited Sindangdong Tteokbokki Town.

It’s just a few minutes away from Dongdaemun, so if you happen to be in this famous shopping area in Seoul and you want to grab a bite to eat, Tteokbokki Town is the right place for you.

What do you like to eat when it rains?

When I was in the Philippines, my Mom would make delicious champorado (chocolate rice porridge) orlugaw (congee or boiled rice porridge) to warm us up on a rainy day.

Here in South Korea, the most famous comfort food during the rainy season is 부침개 (buchimgae) or 전 (jeon), also known as Korean pancake or Korean pizza. Koreans eat it with 막걸리 (makgeolli) or rice wine.

How Do You Like Your Bibimbap?

Tonight, I had a sudden craving for Bibimbap, so my husband and I went to what I call our “emergency hangout”, a 24-hour restaurant across from our apartment, where we often go when we get hungry in the middle of the night or when he comes home from work at 2 or 3 A.M., starving.

For a while I thought my soup world in Korea was limited to things like kimchi jjigae, until Nara introduced me to the delicious world of Seolleongtang 설렁탕~ a simple, but satisfying dish that has been around in Korea for over 500 years!
