Missing Korean Dramas – Where do I watch them now?

Last night when I visited website I realized that they have shut down. And with that it seems as if they have closed yet another gate into the world of Korean Entertainment for outsiders.

This year too Google has published the zietgeist for 2012 highlighting the top 10 most searched people in South Korea. The list is dominated by females K-POP stars with only two male celebrities making it to the list and one of them is not even a K-POP star. Surprisingly Lee Min Ho does not feature in this list.

After reading the article today on Times of India – Korean Wave takes Indian Kids in its sway – suddenly reminded me of the day I was shooting for the Arirang Episode. I had asked my show director if she had visited India. And she told me that she had been to Nagaland to shoot a documentary as Korean Culture was very popular in that part of India. I had not paid much attention to her then, but then reading the article today kind of reinforced the fact that Korean Culture was definitely getting popular in India and it piqued my curiosity to find out more about this phenomenon.

Lee Min Ho is a South Korean actor who is best known for his leading role as ‘Gu Jun Pyo’, in the 2009 South Korean television series Boys Over Flowers.

Currently he is majoring in Film & Art at Konkuk University. In 2011, he starred in the hit action drama City Hunter, which became the number one drama in its time slot, reaching 19.9% ratings. The drama was based off a Japanese manga by Tsukasa Hojo. The show’s popularity throughout Asia has also contributed to Lee Min Ho’s growing popularity in Asia, most notably in China. Lee Min Ho is also popular in the Philippines where three of his TV series were broadcast on the country’s national TV.

First Free Hugs Campaign in Seoul, Korea

Jinwoo Shin, when he saw the first free hugs music video ‘All the same’ by Sick Puppies, he got very inspired. It motivated to launch the first Free Hugs campaign in Korea and he chose places like Jongno, Insa Dong, Chongyechoen, Myeongdong in Seoul, which is buzzing with people young and old throughout the day. It was a rather brave attempt by him because in a place like Korea, anyone who acts out of the norm is frowned upon and is laughed at. As you can probably see in the video, a lot of people who laughing at him for, doing something out of the norm.

World’s First iPhone Movie from South Korea

Paranmanjang - 파란만장 - Night Fishing - first iPhone movie from Korea

Park Chan-Wook, the South Korean director who gave us the most popular Korean movie – Oldboy in the year 2003, has surprised us once again. This time he has gone a step further and shot an entire 30 minute movie using his iPhone 4 camera. The movie is titled, Paranmanjang (파란만장) in Korean and Night-Fishing in English and has won the prestigious Golden Bear Award for best short film at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival on February 19, 2011.
