Yeongchwisan Azalea Festival 2014 in Yeosu (영취산 진달래축제)

On a beautiful spring day, I headed to Yeongchwisan (영취산), a  couple of days before the official start of the Azalea (jindal/진달) festival, which is from April fourth to sixth. There are several ways to enter the mountain, but if you come by public transportation, you most likely will have to walk through a small farming village to get to the hiking path.

The A – Z of Korea

A is for anjou … anjou, oh anjou, I don’t really want to eat you because I’ve just had dinner and the idea of having to eat more really doesn’t make me want to stay drinking here. To add insult to injury, eating is cheating.

B is for booze … booze, yes booze. Korea is infamous for its alcohol consumption rate. Korea has one of the highest alcohol consumption rates in the OECD. You won’t here too many over in KNTO towers (or whatever the Korean tourism crowd is called now) sharing such interesting facts with you. What’s interesting about drink culture here is, even though there is so much alcohol consumed, drinking has so many social rules, it’s a wonder that anyone bothers with it at all.

Letter from Korea, January 2012

Suwon
January 10, 2012

Dear Ireland,

For starters, Happy New Year.

Another year of my life in Korea has passed. This March will mark the seven year anniversary of my first arrival in Korea. It seems like that long. That’s neither good nor bad; it’s just how I feel. If I look back on 2011 I can say that it has been a good year. As well as passing some milestones, it has been productive, it has been exciting, it has been tragic, and it has definitely strengthened my resolve to see things through in the future. But, I don’t really want to go on about how 2011 was when 2012 is here and happening now.

Maybe now he can finally pursue that degree in Korean women’s studies

I assume he was struck by lightning just moments prior

Mobile Blog : Casinos in Korea

Well I’m on a bus to Seoul and with about 4 hours to spare I thought I’d put together a post. This is from my phone so it might be short and I’ll likely edit it into a full blown post later.
Anyway, this evening the wife will be visiting old friends leaving me on my own in the big city. This will likely give me a chance to indulge in my primary vice, casino gambling. I’ll be the first to admit it’s far from a healthy habit, but one I trust myself to control (plus I tend not to stray far from even either wins or losses) . Casinos in Korea are quite interesting to me because they only allow foreigners, with the exception of Gangwon Land. In fact, by law, Koreans are even banned from gambling overseas although this law only comes into play when some celebrity or public figure loses massive amounts and can’t pay the debt.

Quick Hits: Stuff of Interest to Me

Here’s a quick look of stories and events currently of interest to me:

Seoul city plans to designate female only subway cars in an effort to deal with the growing number of sexual assault allegations by women. (Matt Douma / For the Times / August 8, 2011)

Checks will be made upon boarding. It’s not groping, just gender testing:

Welcome to Yeosu
