IVI: Giving Developing Countries a Shot at Saving Lives

Recently, there has been a number of startling cases highlighted in the international media concerning one of the biggest measles outbreaks in the US since the early 90s. We're seeing up close the effects of how a single child not being vaccinated can lead to hundreds being infected. Fortunately enough, most Americans have access to health care facilities and although treatment is costly and burdensome, the measles-related death toll remains low.

In Recognition for Contributions to Irish Culture in Korea…

On Thursday night I was invited over to the Embassy of Ireland in Seoulfor a special event. It had been a while since I’d been there, having been in on occasion helping promote Irish Association of Korea events, and for other reasons. I brought the family with me this time, and remembered to take a shave and a shower beforehand. The visit was worth the effort.

Another Queer Weekend!

Three cool things coming up this weekend.
First off, I want to open with something a little less party and a little more community support. On Sunday April 27th, the Queer Koreans Alliance is throwing a bazar to collect clothes and other goods for LGBT youth. As I've mentioned earlier, Queer Korean Alliance is working toward creating a Rainbow Teen Safe Space for youth who are kicked out of their home after coming out to their family. The drive takes place at Seomdolhyanglin Church between Mangwon Station on the 6 and Hongik Station on line 2 (check out their google map location).

Human Rights Volunteering in Busan

I'm currently a teacher in Busan but want to do some volunteering in my spare time. Does anyone know of any human rights groups in Busan? I have a particular interest in becoming involved with human rights groups and any information would be great.

I noticed that there was a human rights group that used to meet in Seomyeon a few years ago, but it doesn't look like it's still running as thr last post was in 2010.

Any advice would be great!

The Real Star of Saturday

Sunday was kind of a lost day. Why? Because of Saturday night (and Sunday morning). And, before anyone virtual high-fives me for this, I am compelled to say that in the end, it wasn’t worth it. Maybe it’s my age, the amount of years I have been “socializing” vs. how many years you may have been socializing. Maybe it’s the amount of time this has happened that has lead to a perspective shift. Maybe this is the way I have felt all along but just didn’t want to admit it because I was afraid that, in a booze-a-riffic place like South Korea, to deny such excess would create a serious social scene handicap.

Well, that’s just silly.

Volunteer in any kind of social welfare

Hi I'm Lavender. I am currently doing Korean language study in Busan.

I wish to give help to local orphanage, old folks home, animal rescued team. I love children and animal, I am willing to do teaching and even cleaning. I've been sending out my profile to people who looked for volunteers but so far no one contacted me.

I stay in Jurye-dong, it would be best if where you need help is just around my neighborhood, I can visit often and plan my time well. I will also consider to travel if my schedule allows. Sorry that I may not be able to travel to very far destination frequently because I've very bad motion and travel sickness.

FYI I'm Asian and non native English speaker, I can teach children English if you don't mind. Do let me know if you need my help. Thank you.

Waiting For A Second Chance

Located just southwest of Seoul, Asan Animal Shelter is a no-kill facility that provides refuge for stray, abandoned and abused dogs and cats.

Owned by Mr. Park, the shelter is assisted by volunteers who work to rehabilitate animals and find them homes.

Mannam International a Cult?

There has been some buzz around the blogs lately about how Mannam International group is associated with a cult. I think for sure when you look at these articles you can see for yourself that this group is kind of sketchy in that they seem to really want to recruit foreigners and things do sound cult like. However, I attended a Mannam Volunteer event a while back and therefore have something to say. I went to their event where they painted the walls for a school for disabled children and I had a good time. I didn't know they were associated with these groups or this controversy at the time. However, I kept a skeptical distance the whole time.
