Da Jeon (다전) translates to ‘tea field’ in Korean, but it’s both a tea shop and a vegetarian restaurant. It has attentive service and great atmosphere. Da Jeon is located on the 4th floor, above WA Bar, behind the Seomyeon Lotte Department Store. You could get there from Seomyeon subway station (exit 1) or Jeonpo subway station (exit 5).

Hours: noon-11 p.m., Tues.-Sun.


20 Scrumptious and (sometimes) Strange Korean Meals

Ok, so I’ve spoken before about my ‘Top 20 Weird and Wonderful Korean Snacks’ which I’ve had the joy of trying while living in Korea. Now I think it’s the time to look at Korean meals, which I’m pleased to say have been on the whole, a positive experience. That is, after we learnt the names of some Korean foods. Let’s just say that our first meal here was a bit of a disaster- not knowing what anything was, we picked a random item off the menu, and ended up with a ‘jjigae’ (stew) that was so spicy we were sweating by the end (despite it being about 5 degrees in the restaurant). We went home with runny noses and burning mouths to down about a litre of milk each. Good times.


Protein Bread

What do you do when you’ve run out of protein powder and you want something other than meat post workout?

You make protein bread!!!

This turned out to be a happy surprise- I didn’t really know what the result would be, but it was definitely a winner!

I thought life would slow down a bit after my fitness competition.

I was wrong.

It’s only gotten busier! I don’t even know where all my time goes- but it’s been so hard to find the time to blog!

My workout routine has changed a little bit- now I’m going to the gym everyday. There used to be days where I would be only doing cardio, so I didn’t need to go to the gym- but now actually I’m there everyday.

Even Sundays.

Sure two of my workout sessions are only 30 min ab circuits- but it still takes time to go, warm up, stretch, change, leave etc.

And therefore I have less time to devote to my blog.

Loving Hut’s Nampodong Location

Calling all vegetarians!  Life in Korea can be challenging as a vegetarian, even more so as a vegan.  So when friend introduced me to Loving Hut in Seomyeon, I was thrilled!  And then I was equally devastated by it’s recent closure.  The following week I was summoned to a teacher’s lunch, and as we all piled into a couple of cars I was informed that we were going to a vegetarian restaurant.  Now, when a group of Koreans announce such a thing to me, I take it with a pinch of salt!  Perhaps they mean no beef or pork, or perhaps only small pieces of meat mixed through the dish, but not PROPER vegetarian!!!  So imagine my utter surprise, and delight, when we pulled up at a Loving Hut!


Iced Coffee-Tea

I first saw this idea of coffee-tea in Hong Kong.  Talk about a pick-me-up!  It’s actually very refreshing and delicious.  This simple recipe uses only 3 ingredients to create a cool and creamy low-calorie coffee treat.

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

~3/4 cup hot water

-1 tea bag (I used Earl Grey, use your favorite flavored black tea)

-2 packets of 1/2 calorie coffee mix

-sweet soy milk or almond milk (optional)

Directions

1) Steep the tea bag in the hot water for 3-5 minutes.

2) Add about 2-3 tablespoons of the hot tea to the coffee mix in a mug.  This will dissolve the coffee.


Sweet Kabocha Puree

Last week I promised the recipe for the dip you saw with the Low Carb Protein Stick recipe, so here it is!

As you know, I LOVE kabocha. Love Love Love Love Love Love Love kabocha!!! Actually now, I get a discount at my local “Angel Home Mart”- just a random Korean grocery store on danhobak  단호박, as it’s called here. I told them it is my favourite, and because they like me, they say “special discount, only for you” :)


Korean Sweet Rice Cake ‘Samoas’

Korean sweet rice cakes (gyungdan) are traditionally filled with red bean paste and coated in different grain or bean powders.  I created this rice cake recipe by chance when I was experimenting with different fillings and coatings and wound up with one that tastes like the famous ‘samoas’ girl scout cookie!  However, they are much healthier.  There are many types of Korean rice cakes, but this one is the easiest as it does not require ‘pounding’ with a pestle.  You simply make the 4-ingredient dough and boil the rice cake balls.  This particular version is filled with Nutella and coated with toasted coconut…yum!  Feel free to create your own unique variations.

Korean Soy Milk Review

Since living in Korea,  I have switched to drinking soy milk.  I didn’t ever love the taste of milk, but after the funky smell and price of Korean milk, I opted to try something new.  Below is a list of several Korean soy milk brands I have tried and my brief review of each from my favorite to least favorite.  Soy milk in Korean is called  ’duyu’ (두유).
