Intro to Makgeolli Brewing Class May 10th!!!

We were so excited about last April’s enthusiasm for the class, we simply had to follow it up with another!  Actually this is the first class that will kick off […]

Intro to Brewing Makgeolli Class April 19th!

Spring is in the air, and we have been in the Susubori lab brewing a lot recently.  There’s nothing better than having a cold, fresh batch of homemade makgeolli in the fridge to enjoy on a warm spring evening.  So it’s time to have another Intro to Brewing Makgeolli class to share the knowledge on how to make you own springtime brew!  As ever the class will be taught by our expat makgeolli experts Becca Baldwin and Dan Lenaghan, and you will be able to take  home your very own batch of makgeolli.   Here are the details:

Asan Folk Festival 2013!!

This time of year is always a busy season for Makgeolli, and we are only now getting the time to collect ourselves and reflect on the past few months.  Back in October we had the annual Asan Folk Village Festival weekend.  MMPK teamed up with the always awesome Susubori Academy, along with their expat brewing instructors Becca Baldwin and Dan Lenaghan, to offer a weekend of open air makgeolli classes.

Makgeolli Festival Roundup 2013

It’s that time of year when  we start seeing some excellent makgeolli festivals pop up for us to taste at and partake in.  It can be hard to know exactly when these things emerge until it’s too late, so here is a wrap up of what we know is going on.  We have our ears to the ground and we will be updating here when we get any new information about makgeolli events coming up.

Hanbok Day at the Hagwon!

In the last post we highlighted the Chuseok gifts given to Evan by his students at the hagwon. For the Chuseok holiday Evan’s hagwon also had a day where the students and teachers all wear hanbok(traditional Korean clothes) and play traditional Korean games! This is a really common event at hagwons, but don’t expect any events like this at public school! (Unless you work at a really small school)

As Evan mentions in the video, this is a great example of a (one of the few) positives to having a private school job. You often get to participate in fun events, holiday parties, and get more one on one interaction with students than you do at at public school.

Check out Evan in hanbok, and his adorable students in our most recent video! :)

Chuseok Jeon Making Class Success!

Mamas & Papas came together to learn how to make a Chuseok staple: Jeon! We had expert instruction from the head chef at Muldwinda, who patiently coached us into making the perfect Jeon. We then successfully demolished all our jeon with plenty of delicious makgeolli. We are as ever grateful for the awesome hospitality we always receive when at Muldwinda. Keep your eyes open for more events like this in the future :)

September 21st ‘Chuseok’ Meeting Registration Open!!

Wouldn’t you know it, our regular Makgeolli Mamas & Papas meeting falls right smack in the middle of the Chuseok holiday!  As Chuseok is a traditional eating and drinking holiday, we thought we should find somewhere with a traditional style to celebrate ourselves.  Of course we were inevitably steered towards the Insadong area, and we stumbled on a traditional alcohol house that has a seriously extensive makgeolli selection!

Introducing Brian Romasky: A Makgeolli Homebrew Blog

We love hearing about people in the community who are experimenting with makgeolli making.   We recently got in touch with Brian Romasky, who has started making his own makgeolli, and is documenting his results on his blog.  We wanted to know a bit more about Brian, so we asked him to introduce his makgeolli story to us.

Tell us a bit about yourself, where are you from & what do you do for a paycheck these days?

Makgeolli School – An Adventure in Tasting

Rating and Opening

A while ago our MMPK staff and a few die-hard makgeolli lovers got together for a night of education and tasting wonderment.  We wanted to improve our own knowledge of just what is out there, so we can then pass it on to our fellow Mamas & Papas.  We couldn’t have chosen a better place than Makgeolli School right near Isu station.
