Seasons

Dear Korea #140

Yo! Long time no see! I guess putting together a book and an exhibition ended up taking a little longer than expected. The good news is that the book is available for purchase for everyone living in Korea, so that’s pretty awesome. I’m still in the process of figuring out some things before making it available for international orders, so I do apologize to everyone who’s been waiting.

It’s sad that even when I update, this comic is still about a week or two late. I don’t know about any other areas, but all the cherry blossoms are gone down here in Gwangju. As beautiful as it all was, I didn’t realize how dangerous it could be to drive through a glittery rain of pink petals on a humid, yet windy day. The important part is that it was fun.

I really hate drawing cars..

Dear Korea #095 - Seriously. Stop It

Hey readers! In case you don’t follow me on Facebook for one reason or another, I was away on vacation for the past couple of weeks. This is why the updates have been rather…lacking. Now that vacation time is over, it’s time to get back to work. Boo.

During my vacation, a couple of friends of mine that I used to work with back when I was living stateside decided to take a family trip to Seoul. Since I tend to get unreasonably happy and excited whenever someone from home visits, I sent them essay long tips on traveling in Korea and went up to the big city for a few days to spend time with them while showing them around (even though this resulted in us getting lost multiple times).

Dear Korea #091 - Running Through the Monsoon

Starting this week, I’ll be picking up some extra work in hopes of making some extra cash (at least for this month). While I’m hoping that this doesn’t mean awkward/late updates, I’m just writing this now as a warning. I’ll try to be good!

Korean summers are sometimes better known as monsoon season. When you’re not fighting off the dreaded heat, you’re probably getting caught up in rain somewhere. According to the weekly forecast in my area, it’s supposed to rain for the next five days. Boo.

Dear Korea #085 - Seeing Yellow

Dear Korea #085

It took long enough, but it appears that spring is finally here! I still can’t believe it was snowing in parts of the country not even a few weeks ago. The weather is such a strange thing.

For those of you that may not be familiar with it, yellow dust is a seasonal meteorological phenomenon which affects much of East Asia sporadically during the springtime months. The dust originates in the deserts of Mongolia, northern China and Kazakhstan where high-speed surface winds and intense dust storms kick up dense clouds of fine, dry soil particles. On this coldest day in December...

From what my friend tells me this is the coldest day in December that Korea has seen in 27 years. That not only made my eyebrows raise but at the same time give me chills. Temperatures in the teens usually doesn't come around till January. But it looks like things will "warm" up next week, a bit.

To beat the cold my friend and I enjoyed watching a movie and TV in the comfort of my warm home. For dinner we had homemade bulgolgi and japchae, with lettuce for wraps. It was a warming meal and also quite wholesome.

Seoul Seasons

Korea has four distinct seasons. Cherry Blossoms in Spring, Sweltering Summer, Fall colors of the leaves in Autumn and Skiing and snowboarding in Winter. These are the shots of the season, conveniently taken from my window :)

하얀 눈이 예뻐요!

The fresh and beautiful snow came down on Seoul today, leaving a glimmering snowy path to travel on the way home. Certainly it had the kids in a frenzy and people just generally caught by surprise. I really think it came early this year and is a sign of what this winter is going to be like.
