Of 14ths and Chocolate

How Koreans (and Japanese) celebrate Hearts Day aka Valentine’s Day is quite different from how the Philippines and many parts of the world do. In Korea, it’s the best day for the ladies to “confess their affection” through giving chocolates or small tokens to the guys they admire. The guys then, reciprocate that affection after a month, which they call White Day (March 14th).

Vlog Entry #18: Finding Nathan

Happy Father’s Day to the best dad I could ever hope for! Dad, thank you for your endless love and support, and for giving me all the tools I’ve needed to succeed during this crazy adventure I’ve been on. I may be 12,000 miles away for now, but soon I’ll be using that compass you gave me before I left to find my way home. I love you so much.

Unending Love by Rabindranath Tagore

I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times…
In life after life, in age after age, forever.
My spellbound heart has made and remade the necklace of songs,
That you take as a gift, wear round your neck in your many forms,
In life after life, in age after age, forever.

Whenever I hear old chronicles of love, its age-old pain,
Its ancient tale of being apart or together.
As I stare on and on into the past, in the end you emerge,
Clad in the light of a pole-star piercing the darkness of time:
You become an image of what is remembered forever.

You and I have floated here on the stream that brings from the fount.
At the heart of time, love of one for another.
We have played along side millions of lovers, shared in the same
Shy sweetness of meeting, the same distressful tears of farewell-
Old love but in shapes that renew and renew forever.

A Surprise Mother’s Day Visitor

It’s the kind of thing you have to see to believe: waking up to the sound of a mysterious knock on your door; turning over in bed because you assume someone has the wrong apartment; hearing the knock again and begrudgingly rolling out of bed; opening the door ready to give some random Korean person a piece your mind, when suddenly… you see your mom standing right in front of you.

Crazy right?! And on Mother’s Day weekend of all times! I was shocked and overjoyed, to say the least! If I were someone just reading this post I wouldn’t believe it either. So while my mom and I were out making the most of our short weekend together in Korea, I took pictures every step of the way as proof of all the fun things we did together! Below are the highlights. My Renewal Decision and 4 Life Lessons That Helped Me Make It

After thinking heavily about whether or not to renew my contract with EPIK, I’ve decided to return home in August. Signing on for a second year would offer me several enticing financial benefits and mouthwatering travel opportunities. And I’ve had a positive experience at my school, where I would continue to work if I were to renew. But during my time in Korea, I’ve learned or re-learned four life lessons, and made some new discoveries about myself, that have persuaded me to wrap things up at the one-year mark.

When you open your heart and you open your mindflat,550x550,075,f

You might be surprised what you will find

People more willing to say yes than no

A thousand doors to where you want to go

Strange new places, unfamiliar faces

Sprinkled with only the slightest traces

Of home, of the past

Try to make the moment last

Because after you blink

There’s no time to think

Of what you would’ve changed

Left out or rearranged

The present is fleeting

It’s here and it’s gone

Breathe in, the night is greeting

You, breathe out and it’s dawn

Don’t look back, no regrets

Dear Dad

Dad and NathanDear Dad,

In ten hours I’ll be on a plane to Korea. At the moment, the only thing that amazes me more than that fact is your boundless love and support. Where ever my passions have called me, you have been a constant force of guidance and encouragement. No words are good enough to adequately express how much that means to me, and how lucky and proud I feel to be your son.

The sanctity of Travel lies in its tendency to command your respect as you set out to peer voyeuristically into other human lives. Navel-gazing at a time like this is over-indulgent and simply uncouth: There’s a time for raw vulnerability, but this isn’t it. Chin up, shoulders back, deep breath: Youre on your own now, Das. Lock it down.

Much Ado about White Day

Today is White Day, 화이트데이 (hwaiteu dei) in Korean. White Day is another special day for couples celebrated on March 14th in some countries in Asia including South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. White Day is similar to Western-style Valentine’s Day wherein men give chocolates, candies, flowers or gifts to their ladylove.
