Pictured are Diana, Lora, Mimi and Sara. They are part of my smartest class. These girls are really clever and quite witty.

Diana is the sassy one that is always dishing it out. Lora is boy crazy and the boys are crazy for her, as well; she has a new boyfriend every other week. Mimi is the smartest and much wiser than the other girls. Sara is definitely the quintessential popular girl that doesn’t think too much about her actions and is actually pretty rude to the other girls.

These girls have gotten me in trouble more than once. I guess I can only blame myself for speaking Korean in class, but you would think you could trust some students not to tell the other teachers. They’re my easiest class, because their English is so advanced that we could talk easily for hours. They’re also my hardiest class, because they’re such little bitches. Happy Wednesday.

Lullabies, AC/DC, and a new Korean sleep product for children

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware that Koreans sleep less than they should. Need a hint? Try looking at how many are sleeping (or trying to sleep) on the subway, bus, or while waiting for a restaurant to deliver lunch. The sleeping habits engendered by kids often carry on to adulthood, which doesn’t bode well for a lot of reasons. Something about staying up late to do homework after going to multiple hagwon, only to look forward to more the next day. Yeah, sleep would be a respite – too bad none of my students seem to get enough of it.

This girl reminds me of the Korean version of Moody’s daughter in Californication. She’s cute, spunky, and smart as hell. She’s one of my favorite students too. Wish I had named her Becca instead of Elizabeth. Bygones.

The shirt says, “Welcome In My NIGHTMARE.” Bad English, but it’s warning enough. Ted is evil.

Once a month at my school, we celebrate with a birthday party. We eat kimbop, mandu and cake. The kids even get to indulge with a bit of orange juice. It’s awesome. Even though it cuts into my two hour+ lunch break, I’m okay with it. Because I get to eat cake. Yum.

I nursing the biggest headache right now. Sometimes I just hate Mondays. Luckily, the first student I see everyday is Nikky. Nikky is a sweetheart.

The kids’ diary entries are so poetic to me sometimes. This one made me tear up a bit.

Today title: Funeral

Today was a my grandmother’s (My mom’s mom) funeral. I cried, and my cousin (my aunt’s daughter cried too. Today when we were sleeping, I wished I could have fallen asleep in a hurry. But, I could not sleep.

Today title: Burned

Today we burned my grandma’s body. My mom and aunts cried. After that, we went to Yeong-cheon. And we buried grandma’s body next to my grandpa’s body. Yesterday and today were very sad days.

The kids’ diary entries really entertain me sometimes, because they’re either totally off the wall, or I completely connect with them. This entry is one I could have written as a small child.

Title: Wedding

Today was my aunt’s wedding. I saw my aunt. She was very beautiful. I want to wear a wedding dress. Because it is very beautiful. I saw my uncle too. My uncle was very handsome. And my uncle was very tall. Today was a beautiful day.

I cannot get this boy to stop crying! Everything sets him off. On this day, he started crying because I didn’t choose him to read second in class. What a tough life he lives.
