Smartphone Perspectives

Not so long back a blog post by photographer John Steele on the pros of using a smart phone for taking photographs turned up in my timeline.

Rando Man

The photo below does not inspire much, I imagine. It is in many respects quite depressing. A dry and slightly burnt piece of toast, a cold strip of streaky bacon, and the end of a rather watery looking class of orange juice, all wrapped around a white circular border. It is, other than the leftovers from my breakfast, a pitifully ordinary scene worth no moment of fame in any media. It is not artistic, so don’t go thinking it is. The loose crumb is only a loose crumb, the juice was as I left it, as was the toast and bacon. Just to the right was a eggy plate and a mug with a thin brown layer of leftover coffee. The photo was entirely random. So why bother?

iPhone 5 locked to SK no Olleh?

According to this Apple website document the new iPhone 5 will be locked to SK but will be available unlocked through Olleh.

Can anyone confirm this through an SK store?

I think this is strange because prior to the iPhone 5 it was the reverse, I remember the iPhone 4S being unlocked under contract through SK and locked through Olleh.

I need to know because I'm looking to upgrade to the new iPhone but am with SK and want it unlocked for when I travel.

Any help is appreciated

Dublin Pride, June 25 2011

Hanging around in town (Dublin, not Seoul or Suwon) yesterday we stumbled on the Dublin Pride festival. I knew about it but hadn’t registered it until we were on Georges Street.

The biggest thing about the parade, as far as I could see, was the number of participants! It was quite spectacular, at least for me anyway. I have no idea about the number of gays or there rights/problems/social stigmas that are still attached to them. I know that they are definitely more out and about than back in the day, the day being when I was in secondary school or something like that. I found out later that there was around 30,000 people at it – that makes it second to Paddy’s Day in size and importance

Review: i Tour Seoul 2 (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad)

It’s rather rare to see a second version of an app with such marked improvements. After reviewing the first version of the i Tour Seoul / iTourSeoul app, I actually uninstalled it and thought nothing more of it. As the proud owner of a 1st gen iPod Touch and an Android smartphone, I wasn’t interested in an app that required an internet connection to read text.

Review: Seoul Bus (iDevice app)

The Seoul subway system has been covered in the iDevice universe time and time again. The Seoul bus system, however, has only seen a couple releases - almost entirely in Korean, and . I'm quite happy to have discovered this app recently - it was only released in September - and am equally happy to pass it onto you.At its simplest, Seoul Bus gives you information on virtually every bus and bus

Review: Seoul Metro Tour app (Korean sauna edition)

Even as more foreigners are picking up the iPhone and iPad, I find myself sticking with an iPod Touch - and a full-fledged netbook computer better able to do the heavier lifting. There are times when one or the other is preferred; in this case, looking up the subway lines is an easy job for the iPod Touch.

Enter this free app - SeoulMetroTour Lite - into the mix. After starting the program, you can tap your way into a Seoul subway system map completely in English. Tap on Sights (as above) to highlight a number of tourist-friendly destinations.

When Is the Palm Pre Coming to Korea?

I’m in no way tech-savvy, but I don’t like the iPhone, and somehow I’m just not optimistic about a Google phone. I want my Palm back! I’m surprised, then, about how South Korean companies are lining up behind the two rivals for combat.

KT has decided to bring the Nexus One, considered the chief competition to Galaxy S, into the domestic market. With SK Telecom recently joining hands with Galaxy S manufacturer Samsung to open an offensive on the iPhone, KT has decided to do battle with the Nexus One, known as the “original Android phone,” until the next generation iPhone is released.

Review: Korean Food Dictionary (iPhone / iPod)

Put together by Daniel Gray from Seoul Eats and the O'ngo Team, the Korean Food Dictionary app offers a great look at Korean foods. The app isn't perfect, but it's the best on the market as of now. With over 130 different dishes described available, you won't find everything under the sun - but the most common dishes are all here. The first screen you see once the app loads is above - start with
