Chilbo - The art of Enameling

How time flies when you are having fun!

The past weeks have kept me really busy learning some quite interesting crafting techniques. I have been trying out Chilbo art or Enameling. In this art form, 7 kinds of precious items gold, silver, lapis, crystal, coral, agate and pearl have been used in the earlier days to make jewellery.

I was able to attend this program because of the Itaewon global center in Seoul. I am so glad I live so close to this center that enables me to take part in all these fun activities and explore more and more about the Korean culture. We could do the enameling on pendant or a broach or a key chain. First, inability to choose between broach or pendant. Happy to say, I overcome that indecision by choosing to make two: pendant and broach :)

Photographers in Korea

If you are into photography and you are into Korea, a fine combination of the two can be found in [ P I K ], a new enough free online magazine which uses the accronym of its description Photographers in Korea, as its name. More specifically: “PIK is an online photography magazine featuring contemporary photography […]

Muldwinda: Menu

Who Is Muldwinda?

Muldwinda is arguably the best makgeolli bar in all of Seoul.  They run in close partnership with Susubori Academy, which is the premier school for traditional alcohol brewing education.  Their knowledge of craft makgeolli and their commitment to nurturing the development of makgeolli culture is unparalleled, and you will be hard pressed to find a more relaxed and satisfying evening than at this bar.   It has a laid back & calming atmosphere, and their food reflects the same quality as their makgeolli.

Where the Wild Things Are

I love the book Where the Wild Things Are, I have since I was little.  I remember when my Kindergarten teacher read the book to the class, I also remember that I was convinced that it was a book written by her husband since both their last names were Sendak.

To honor and remember the awesomeness that was Maurice Sendak's literary legacy, I decided yesterday's Current Issue class would be a great way to introduce some of Mr. Sendak's Wild Things to some of my Wild Things.

A Tree Grows in Kyungsung

My last spin across the dance floor that is Korea, I was reluctant to make my apartment into a home.  I was only going to be there for a year so why buy much?  Well my return has hopefully made me a bit wiser, but only time will tell.

Last year I put up a few posters up on the walls and a few drawings later in the year done by my students, but beyond that I didn't change much.

busanjin fabric market

picked up some fabrics to make an apron at busanjin fabric market — don’t be fooled, busan readers, you actually get there from beomil (bumbledong) subway exit 1 — and snapped a few images of the colorful fabrics for making hanbok. word on the street is, brides to be get the goods for their wedding hanbok here.

thank you, kindly lady, for letting me take your picture.
