Korean Police Deny Wrongdoing In Australian’s Rape Investigation

Airdre Mattner says she was drugged, abducted & raped in Seoul last September, but after dealing with South Korean hospital staff & police, including a recent Facebook post by police that revealed private information regarding her case, she says she's been devastated her even further. Korea FM spoke with Mattner & the Korea Herald reporter that's been covering her story to learn more about how both foreign & Korean victims are treated by police & other authorities while seeking justice. Her Midnight Run, My Empathy

My best friend’s replacement pulled an infamous “midnight run” last weekend.

Midnight_Run

Her escape wasn’t discovered until, presumably, she was on a plane bound for her home in Australia. Our only indication of this, a presumably-hastily-written email to her recruiter. A “mea culpa” of sorts. Oops.

If we were to write an obituary for her Korean death, it could read: You were only 23, with so much left to see, so much left to do. Or: what was your name again?

She was here such a short time that perhaps only one photo, taken during my friend’s goodbye dinner, is the only evidence this girl ever set foot in this country. Well, that and her suitcase, which she left in the apartment, as well as some ramyeon wrappers and empty soda bottles.

Darling Harbour - My Quiet Place

Letter from Korea, May 2011

Suwon, South Korea
24/5/2011

 Dear Ireland,

The summer is upon us. Of course we all have different ideas of what the summer is. For me, it’s the holidays. This June, I will be working through my summer holidays but don’t worry; I have two months of holidays so working through them isn’t as big a catastrophe as it might sound. This summer I will be in Dublin (What of the letter from Korea?  Well perhaps I’ll compromise). Every summer Dublin fills with Europeans students who come to study English. This summer will be no different. I make a living out of this.

Goodbyes

This one was written over a month ago now in the wake of the ending of my relationship with Fallon. I wasn't sure I wanted to post it, but it seems right that such a significant period in my life be commemorated on my site. I've not edited it at all since I wrote it in early January.

Goodbyes are a common part of life on the road. Differing itineraries and budgets mean that no friendship or relationship on the road can last forever. Eventually you'll have to part ways and experience that bittersweet mix of emotions as you're both grateful for the time you've had with a person and sad that the time was not longer.

For almost two years I was lucky enough to have shared a path with Fallon. Having met at a house party in Gwangju, we bonded over our mutual hatred of night clubs and our mutual closeness to our families.

Confessions

He picked me up in his old, beat up Kia and we headed to The Coffee Bean for 4,000₩ Americanos and language exchange.  He is back in Korea after a year studying abroad in Melbourne, Australia.  The 9AM sunlight was too much for our eyes that morning, though he had a legitimate excuse having had only 3 hours of sleep after a long night of English to Korean translation for the new side job he had picked up, not to supplement income (as it pays shit, apparently) but because he “loves English”.  I tell him of my plans for future travel and other countries I dream to teach in.  My ever-lingering, slight guilt is even more present while I muse of these things to him; how is it fair that my luck of a birthplace in an English speaking country allows me to throw the daily grind to the wind and travel the world, while he wants nothing more than to return to the land of 6PM BBQ’s, beer and relaxation, but is unable?  Instead, he will head to work at his family owned coffee shop for his 11 hour

No Time Left For Asia

It’s not wise to cancel the same trip twice, unless good will overflows, or your power is preeminent.

Grappling with the worst oil spill in the nation’s history, President Barack Obama has abruptly scrapped a trip to Indonesia and Australia for the second time this year.

The president informed the leaders of both countries of the news in phone calls Thursday night, offering his “deep regret” and pledging to reschedule soon, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs announced in a statement just after midnight. Obama was to depart on a weeklong trip to both countries, along with a quick stop in Guam, on June 13.

Asked the reason for the delay, Gibbs told The Associated Press that Obama was staying home “to deal with important issues, one of which is the oil spill.”

Life in Korea: getting your taxes done in Korea and at home

Author's note: I am not a professional tax preparer, accountant, or IRS worker. While I've spent hours researching this post from official government sources, seek the professional help if you need it. Also consider using a program like TurboTax to submit the paperwork electronically (but see below for an important detail!)
