Dear Korea #133: I Don't Know You

Though how long it takes ranges from person to person, it seems as if the issue presented in this comic is one that affects very obvious looking expats at one point or another. As someone who doesn’t look too different from the locals, I’ve been lucky enough to not have experienced this myself, though I see it happening to my friends on a regular basis. While I can’t speak for anyone else, from what I’ve gathered, most of the people I know generally don’t mind having a conversation with strangers who want to practice some of the English they’ve learned. Heck, considering how most of them are teachers, this is kind of a good thing. That being said, there is a time and a place, and a forced dialogue in the middle of dinner or a date is apparently not ideal.

Dear Korea #099 - Just a Teeny Bit Envious

I would like to start by saying that not all of the guys I know are creepers that spend their time checking out random women on the street. Heck, as far as I know, most of them are perfect gentlemen. Either that or they’ve mastered the art of controlling their peripheral vision.

Anyways, if there’s one thing I’ve noticed while living in Korea, it’s that the women here are stupid gorgeous. Not everyone agrees, and that’s totally fine (different strokes). While I’m completely aware that this may have something to do with all the plastic surgery that exists here, that doesn’t change the fact that there is a lot of eye candy in this country. I personally think some of it may have to do with the fact that they put a lot of work into looking good before stepping out into the public (though this sometimes leads to destructive behavior). Compared to lazier folks like me (I don’t remember the last time I got a haircut..), it makes sense that the hard working ladies here look so much prettier.

That being said, I’m feeling the need to clarify that how a woman looks does not define her worth, and that everyone is beautiful in their own way. I feel silly for thinking that I have to include this disclaimer, as it’s something I feel is super obvious, but better safe than sorry…right?

In other news…AHHH, SO CLOSE TO A HUNDRED STRIPS!!!

Dear Korea #090 - Sorry for the Wardrobe Malfunction

Argh, how embarrassing. Not only did I miss last week’s update (here’s a silly, sad comic to make up for it), but this week’s is also late. If it helps, I’ve been suffering all morning with a wicked case of food poisoning that was brought on by delivery fried chicken from last night. The betrayal hurts so much worse than the tummy ache.

Dear Korea #080 - A Little Privacy Please

Dear Korea #080

Yay! A new comic! It’s on time too! This is something I shouldn’t be celebrating!

Anyways, the situation presented in this strip is one that happens a LOT more often than I thought it did (especially in smaller cities). I guess it’s something I don’t ever experience too much while on my own, as I look fairly Korean. Whenever I was out with my flock of foreigner friends, I always assumed people were looking over our way due to all the English they were hearing. It wasn’t until I started going for more walks with my very uncommon roommate that I noticed people blatantly staring and taking not-so-sneaky pictures.

Dear Korea #064 - Please Stop Staring

Dear Korea #064

Oh jeez, this is really late. I do apologize for that! I hope the not-so-cleverly censored nudity in  the second panel of this comic helps make up for it!

Dear Korea #062 - One Ring to Rule Them All

Dear Korea #062

This one took a little longer than usual to finish, which is why it’s a few hours late. On the bright side, I’m actually okay with how it came out. Gasp! Shock! Awe! Who knows how long that will last?

어머나! = It’s kind of like the Korean version of “Oh my gosh!”

Dear Korea #031

Dear Korea #031

From what I’ve heard from my friends who have children (especially those with babies who are 100% non-Korean), this happens all the time. Oh the horror stories I’ve heard. To be fair, it’s your own faults for having such cute babies.

Kidding!

I wish I could say more, but I am dead tired. July is turning out to be a super busy month! I hope everyone else out there is enjoying their summer as much as I am!
